Virtual Interviews
As stated earlier in my blog, I would like to interview professor Iemma from the English department. I had the pleasure of participating in her romanticism course last semester, and she is now one of my directors at the Writing Center. I feel she is a wealth of knowledge for the field I would like to go into and has a lot of experience. I hope to accomplish many of her experiences. My mechanism for interviweing her woud be to focus on asking questions that pertain to what I wanna do. But to also ask her about what steps she took to get to where she is today and how she went about taking those steps. I also want to ask her about being the director of the Writting Center as that is a goal of mine as well.

Corporate Writing
When I first think of corporate writing, I think writing for business or money. corporate writing is writting generated by a corporation or company. In other words, business related writing. Some examples include company emails, reports, proposals etc.
When searching for a company, I literally typed in company websites into Google. But then I referred back to the websites on the syllabus and searched something closer along those lines. I stumbled upon the The Lesbian Herstory Archives. It’s a New York City-based archive, community center, and museum that preserves lesbian history. Located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, the archive contains the world’s largest collection of materials by and about lesbians. Their website provides a brief history of the archives and how to use their website to access virtual tours, newsletters, and credits for the archive coordinators and website creators. It’s like its corporate writing that contains more corporate writing, I really liked the layout and colors. The credits are what stood out to me the most. It’s not so often we see website creators receiving credit on the homepage of company websites. I also like the structure and how certain words are highlighted to lead to other links within the website. It’s pretty informative, but it seems like you don’t actually have to go to the location to get all the information. I’m not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. But overall, I can see how corporate writing is a little more structured and geared more towards informing.
I decided to answer all of the questions using three different links provided on the syllabus. I explored all of them and answered the remaining question according to all sites!
What contribution does it make to scholarship?
The Walt Whitman archive provides real published works essential to scholarship. It also contains letters and resources.
What is being done with this project that could not be done in print-based scholarship?
The archive contains audio for the portraits and photos. There is also a link attached to support the archive.
Is the purpose of the site/project/archive clearly articulated?
The purpose of the site is not clearly articulated. The home page just contains updates but no background on the purpose.
How can you use it for your research?
You can use the UCL transcribe Bentham for research. Specifically for current research. The blog posts are chronologically up to date containing statistics and transcripts as well.
Is it aesthetically pleasing? Is it searchable? Static?
I think the blog is rather simplistic. The colors are kind of dark and dull. I think it could use some more pictures as well.
Who are the authors/contributors? What are their roles?
The author of this blog is not clear but Transcribe Bentham is an participatory initiative based in the Bentham Project at University College London. Its aim is to engage the public in the online transcription of original and unstudied manuscript papers written by Jeremy Bentham.
Is it a collaborative project?
I’m not sure if this is a collaborative project but I’m assuming that the library has to receive access to these books from somewhere so in a sense, yes it is collaborative.
Who is the primary audience?
The primary audience would be researchers or people who love to read.
What are the strengths? What are the weaknesses?
I would say the strengths of this website are the books they provide and the sources they use clearly stated at the bottom. I think the weakness is the layout of the website. I think a little renovation will help it look more inviting and modern.
Is the site easy to navigate? ( This goes for all websites).
- I think all of the sites were pretty easy to navigate.
Op Ed Examples
https://www.colorlines.com/articles/preserving-our-democracy-starts-saving-our-environment-op-ed
- This Op Ed titled “Preserving Our Democracy Starts with Saving our Environment,” speaks about how people of color and underserved communities have long borne the uneven burden of pollution’s impact. I chose to post this because I am an advocate for equality and I feel this imbalance requires a lot more attention than given. A lot of people are unaware of how the negative impacts of envirornmental issues affects the lower class.
https://www.businessoffashion.com/articles/opinion/op-ed-the-dark-side-of-social-media
- In this Op Ed, Emma Allowed speaks about social media and how it has become a trap. I found it interesting because the idea of social media as negative is such a debatable topic in my opinion and we have also discussed this juxtaposition in class. She describes social feeds as a “sea of illusions.”
My Op Ed
Selines Sanchez, Food Insecurity in New York City
March 13, 2020
Personally, it’s infuriating that people from low income communities don’t have access to, or are properly educated about healthier foods. More than 1.2 million New York City residents, or 14.4 percent, are food insecure. What is food insecurity? You may be wondering. The state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Ask yourself, do you know what you should really be eating? More importantly, can you afford it? Have you ever noticed that once a community becomes gentrified, fresher, more modern produce shops appear? Meanwhile low income neighborhoods are full of fast food restaurants; promoting the food we teach students to avoid. This is because once an area is gentrified, it conforms to middle-class taste, but the people living in the area are not of the middle-class therefore leading them to purchase cheaper, less nutritious food to feed their families. In extreme cases, families now have to move to even lower income areas with little to no acces to fresh, affordable food. This can lead to various eating disorders, which are immensely poisonous to one’s mentality and self-esteem. Obesity alsone can destroy these and many other aspects of human beings such as depression and anxiety. This issue goes deeper than stress and lack of nutritional foods & knowledge in low income areas. With proper knowlege and access to fresher and healthier foods, we aren’t just imporoving health, but preventing the destruction of life due to inequality.
Since the term and concept is still rather unfamiliar, it may be something we don’t always think about, or realize the importance of. Many children in lower income neighborhoods don’t get the proper education to know what to eat and the importance of taking care of your body. Because of this many people are clueless as to how or what to eat. Even then, many don’t have access to or can’t afford to maintain a consistent healthy lifestyle. By middle school, obesity rates are flying. According to CDCP (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention),obesity prevalence was 13.9% among 2-to 5-year-olds, 18.4% among 6-to 11-year-olds. Childhood obesity is also more common among certain populations, mainly low income communities.
What makes me the most upset is that food insecurity is an easy fix. To reduce it we can attend local food pantries, instead of industrialized markets. Companies like city harvest and Grow NYC do pop up farmers markets multiple times per week. Supermarkets should have fresher produce. The FIFO (First in First Out) should be more heavily enforced. I’ve worked in food service for a majority of my employment career. Many employees including myself are briefly trained in this process and oftentimes don’t take it seriously because management is too lazy or lenient. I feel schools should be taking the conversation about nutrition more seriously in school. Not only focusing on the health benefits of healthy foods, but how to access them properly. High School and University curriculum should include how to shop smartly and nutritionally, including ingredients that should be avoided as well. Mainly, fresh produce and nutritional knowledge should accessible to all students of all communities and ages. We should never be insecure about one of the best things in the world. Food!
The Informational Interview/ Social Media Self-Assessment
Interview questions for Dr. Iemma
Dr. Tina Iemma works in the English department. She was my professor for romanticism last semester and I enjoyed every moment of it. I would like to interview her because she has worked as a professor of english, pursuing her PhD, interim director of the Writting Center, and writting her dissertation. These are all tgings I would like to accomplish so I think interviewing her would be very beneficial. Some questions I would ask include:
- What kind of degree did you get?
- Why did you decide to get your PhD and what PhD are you getting? Where did you get your PhD?
- Did you get your masters? Where?
- Do you have to get your masters at the same school you get your PhD?
- If I want to publish my own books and teach English, do I get my PhD in English or Higher Education?
- How did you land the role of Interim director of the University Writing Center and how has it impacted your career path?
- How did you handle people who told you it wasn’t worth it?
Social Media Presence:
- Personally I don’t feel like I’ve ever posted something “inappropriate” or that “shouldn’t be seen to the public.” However, I am aware of public opinion and know that some photos I have uploaded might not be considered appropriate by some age groups. Not that I care or find them inappropriate, but if I knew my social media was being viewed by potential jobs I would take down any bathing suit pictures. NAturally, I don’t really like to post pictures of when I go to casual parties so I don’t think I come across as that type on the internet. I think I come across a regular 20 year old student who likes to travel and spend time with family. I also love to dress up so I usually only post pictures then. I am comfortable with my body and don’t take issue with showing my skin but I know that people are offended very easily these days so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the pictures i’ve posted are “not professional” or “inappropriate” in a sense. I would just call it confidence.

THE SELFIE
My first selfie represents something I would send using snapchat or post on my instagram story for a day. I wouldn’t be an average girl without an iconic duck face selfie! I’m also in my most natural state which is what I like for people to see most of the time. This is the most different picture of all three being that it was taken in my bedroom in casual clothes. I didn’t pay much attention to lighting or posing.
My second selfie would be a photo I would use in a professional setting. I would use it as a headshot for an interview or as a linked in or Handshake profile picture. I filtered it black and white because I felt it made it look more professional and it rids of any impurities. I am also wearing an elegant dress that could be used as business attire rather than a casual outfit. My hair is well groomed and I have make up on.
My last selfie would be a photo I would show someone if they asked for a photo of me. I don’t think it’s calling for much attention but I am still in dressy casual clothing and I have a little make up on. It’s a photo of me causually trying to catch the sunlight from the window in car durring the summer time. So i’m not hanging at home but i’m not working either. I feel it falls perfectly in between my other two photos. I would also use it as a social media post or profile picture but I don’t think the clothing is suited for it to be used as professional.
